I’m thrilled to announce that my new pair of Venice guides has just been published!

These guides incorporate more than 15 years of research on Venetian artisanal traditions. Many of you know that I trained as an art historian. My studies led me naturally to the great Italian artists of the past: Michelangelo, da Vinci, Tintoretto, and many others. However, once I realized the importance of living traditions in Italian culture, I was riveted. It was the beginning of a journey that would take me from the Alps to Palermo, and become my obsession.

Artisans of Venice by Laura Morelli

Over the course of my work, it has always been the stories and the people behind these great traditions that captivate me, that keep me moving forward, digging deeper into the roots of Italian culture. The contemporary Venetian artisans I know, one after another, tell me how important it is to them to pass on the torch of tradition to the next generation.

But in Venice, it’s not easy to tell the treasures from the trash. This is true now more than ever before, as increasing numbers of carnival masks, glass, and other souvenirs flood into the city, imported from overseas and passed off as authentic. There is no substitute for an educated buyer. My goal is to lead you to the city’s most authentic arts: the centuries-old trades of mask making, glass blowing, wood turning, silk spinning, and other traditions. I want to take you beyond the tourist traps and souvenir shops for an unforgettable, immersive cultural experience.

The Venice guides are part of a new series called Laura Morelli’s Authentic Arts, including destinations like Florence, Naples & the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany & Umbria, Sicily, Sardinia, Paris, and Provence.
