In Wales, men traditionally carved wooden “love spoons” for their sweethearts. Few actual examples before the 1800s survive, but the practice of carving these intricate utensils is mentioned as early as the sixth century. The art of carving “love spoons” is not confined to Wales–lovely pieces can be found throughout northern Europe–but the Welsh developed a distinctive Celtic style that endures.
